C2C New Years Eve 2010: NYE Mistakes - Author: Kayleigh L.

Have you ever heard your mother say, ‘I don’t want you to make the same mistakes I made’? And to that you just roll your eyes and continue on with your life wrecking ways? Well to you and your New Years Eve plans I have the same advice.

I used to believe I had a NYE curse, that every December 31st, no matter what plans I made they would be ruined by some evil ‘no fun’ forces. Lately, I have realized it was my own self infliction that causes me to have terrible New Year nights. Lucky for you, I am willing to share my hardships so you don’t make the same mistakes I did.

Mistake #1- Not Planning Ahead

My Mistake: Picture this; New Years Eve 2003, three friends and I playing board games with my friend’s parents. Yes, it was as lame as it sounds. How did I end up in this pathetic position? Well, it was because I waited too long to make concrete plans. I kept putting parties off and brushing things aside hoping something would come along that I could commit to. Due to this I was stuck playing midnight monopoly.

The Lesson: Make your plans in advance. Do not wait until the last minute, things will sell out and you will be stuck playing scrabble until 1:00am.

Mistake #2- Getting Way too Wasted

My Mistake: It was New Years Eve 2004 and I went from party to party and showed everyone my amazing drinking skills; it was pretty fun… supposedly… I don’t remember much of it. I was told the next day I had a brush in with the police, made out with an Australian and did a face plant in the snow. I drank above and beyond my limit and my night may as well never have happened since I can’t even remember where I was for the countdown. (This mistake may or may not have been repeated the following NYE)

The Lesson: Just because it is a special occasion doesn’t mean you should drink that beautiful face off. Drink water in between alcoholic beverages, set a limit or ask your DD to mind your drinking.

Mistake #3- Your Friends/Significant Others Getting too Wasted

My Mistake: Ahhh… New Years Eve 2007; it started out great. I was at a decent party, with great friends, drinking at an appropriate pace (lesson learned). However, someone very close to me did not follow my lead. This person got extremely wasted and under control and somehow I took responsibility. I spent the whole night arguing with this person about taking a cab home and taking care of them. All in all, my night was just as ruined as theirs was.

The Lesson: It is very important to look out for your friends when drinking. However, there is a point where you have to get your friend in a cab and send them home. You shouldn’t have to spend your whole night taking care of them because they are being irrational.

Mistake #4- Picking the Wrong Party

My Mistake: New Years 2009... I wanted to go to place A and my significant other wanted to go to place B. Instead of making a choice, we compromised with place C... which was not a good compromise. We picked a party that did not suit our style in music, our preferred company or ambience and therefore bolted back home right around 12:01am.

The Lesson: Research parties and events before you choose them. Check out the venue before you commit to it for New Years or ask friends opinions to make sure you will have a great time.

New Years 2010, who knows? Maybe I can learn from my mistakes as I hope you have and if not… I am still blaming it on the ‘curse’.
