The Everyman's Guide to Clubbing - Part 1

(Be this man!  But at half the price!)

Models and bottles, free flowing booze, top rank DJs, partying in multi million dollar ultra modern venues all night long…. ya, sounds like a pretty solid plan IF you can get past the velvet rope.  Girls… I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that's never usually an issue for you (and if it is try wearing something lower cut next time you're stuck in line) but if you're anything like the other 50% of the clubbing crowd - male and not rich - then you've usually got your work cut out for you.

So what's the average guy to do when he wants to hit up the nightlife and live VIP?  Well, you could go out and drop a half months wage on a decent blazer, pants and shoes, then spend your night tipping various club staff hundreds of dollars all night long to play you up like your some sort of dot com billionaire.  OR you can take my advice and have the exact same experience with none of the hassle.

Step 1 - Dress the part

(Tools?  Maybe... but at least they're tools in blazers!)

The first time that I went clubbing I rolled up to the place in my old baggy cargo pants, runners, and some sort of t-shirt (yes, even I was young and naïve at one point in time)… BAD DECISION.  I spent the whole night waiting in line and watching people pass me by.  I can't stress how important it is to dress well when you're heading out, that means good looking pants or jeans, decent shoes, button down shirt, and blazer.  These four items alone put you ahead of 30% of the other guys out there (no joke!).

PRO TIP:  It's about the look, not the cost.  My regular club outfit rotation consists of 3 different blazers, 2 pairs of jeans and 2 pairs of dress pants from H&M (all under $50 each) 1 pair of black dress shoes, 1 pair of brown dress shoes ($40 each from Winners), 4 or 5 collared shirts ($40 each at RW&Co.), and a couple different belts ($15 each from Sears).  Alright alright... it's not high end but for less than a Gucci blazer I'm able to rock 15+ different, respectable outfit combos.

Step 2 - Take Advantage of Early Bird Tickets

(Tickets a month ago $40.. tickets the day of $95..)

It blows my mind at the number of people who show up to packed events the day of and pay some door guy or scalper two or three times the face value of the tickets to get in.  If you think that you might want to go to an event then follow my simple 3 step program below:

  1. Buy tickets early
  2. Buy tickets early
  3. Buy tickets early
Promoters will often try to create early hype for their events by pricing the first 50 to 100 tickets far below market value, jump all over these early bird ticket sales and even if you don't end up going you'll be able to get your money back by selling your tickets to one of your friends at a cheaper than cost price.

PRO TIP:  The best possible early bird deals that you can get are for New Years Eve tickets.  You can save hundreds of dollars per ticket by buying a few months in advance.  Let's do the math… 5 friends getting Las Vegas NYE tickets, early bird pricing saves you about $100 per ticket, $500 total savings, guess what?  You just got a free hotel room!

Step 3 - Get on the Guest List

(Less time waiting, more time in the club!)

What if the night you’re going to hit up doesn’t sell advance tickets? Don’t worry; you can still get your name on the door person’s clipboard in less time than it takes to read the first half of this article.

Many clubs offer free online guest list reservations through sites like clubZone.com. These online guest lists are basically free pre-sale tickets and will often hook you up with benefits like line bypass, and free or discounted cover. Get on the guest list and you’re saving enough for a round of drinks plus you don’t end up wasting time milling around with the rest of the cattle in front of the club.

PRO TIP: Make sure that you pay attention to the details of the guest list that you apply for. Some guest lists will approve you right automatically, others will require approval by the club prior to adding you to the list. Many guest lists will require you to arrive before a certain time, if this is the case be there early! Clubs are very strict when it comes to guest list rules, and hey, if you want to live VIP for free showing up somewhere on time isn’t really that much to ask.

.... Next time on the everyman's guide "Ok, I'm in; now what the hell do I do?"
