How to be a Superstar DJ

Being a superstar dj is tough work. You have to stay up all night long playing other people’s music to massive crowds, get paid obscene amounts of money to do it; and deal with the endless supply of booze, babes, drugs, and parties.  clubZone took the time to talk to a few industry insiders and figure out the key elements that differentiate a superstar from your average bedroom disc jockey. Our top tips are below!

1. Nail the Tiesto hands in the air finger point

Tiesto

Nothing tells the crowd that it’s peak time more than pointed fingers and hands in the air. The real key here is to keep a solid “V” shape while looking down with your eyes closed, you want to connect with the crowd but never look directly at them…. You’re a superstar dj, which means that you’re as close to God as the punters are going to get, and God doesn’t look directly at his congregation.

2. Put as much effort as you can into moving anything on the mixer

Anytime you touch anything on the mixer flare out an arm or elbow and bite your upper lip! If you can do this with both arms while moving two dials you’ve already qualified to headline 80% of the events happening out there. Moving a dial ¼ of an inch is tough work and the people in the club need to know that you’re working hard up there fading one track into another.

3. The tighter the shirt the bigger the dj

You didn’t spend all that time tanning, working mixer knobs, and doing lines off of dj whores for nothing. Real superstars wear tight euro style t-shirts to show that they’re better than everyone else.  Bonus points for bleached hair or puka shell necklaces.

And finally….

4. Never smile... ever

Especially if you’re watching the opener warm up the club for you, be sure to sneer at them and ridicule their track selection. Also, try not to stare at the crowd, instead look at the mixer. It’s much more interesting anyway with its colourful lights, dials, and sliders.

Always remember, as a superstar dj.... you’re the show!
