LUVNGRACE ENTERTAINMENT/SHEA/VENUS PROUDLY PRESENTS: ****GRACELAND NIGHT**** extravaganza PULSE NIGHTCLUB SEPTEMBER 4-2009 FEATURING FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY, LEGENDARY GRACELAND DJ: ******ROBERT SHEA****** PLUS: DJ ERIC LEWIS (GORG-O-MISH, GRACELAND) *GOGO DANCERS *PERFORMANCE ART *SPECIAL GUESTS *GRACELAND VISUALS GRACELAND NIGHTCLUB was located at 1250 Richards Street, opened in 1986, closed in 2001. How does one describe the influence and impact of this former massive legendary club on Vancouver's innovative and forward-thinking music and clubculture scene? Graceland and the Luv-a-Fair were often referred to as 'sister clubs'. Even though there might have been periods of time when patrons of one club wouldn't be caught dead in the other, historically speaking there two were the most musically and culturally influencial venues Vancouver has ever experienced. Graceland gave birth to Vancouver's house music scene. Late in 1987, Robert Shea decided he had enough house music records "to play house music all night long", and COME TO HOUSE was born. Other DJs of Graceland were taking note, and soon house music could be heard in various quantities on a variety of nights, including those of DJs Mick Shea, Debbie Jones, Phil Fontaine, and in later years DJ Noah, David Hawkes, etc. Other well known Djs also got some of their early breaks at Graceland, including DJ Jeremy, James Brown, DJ Czech, Leanne, etc. The worlds leading DJ's/Producers/Acts such as Sven Vath, Laurent Garnier, Westbam, The Orb, Consolidated, MC 900 ft Jesus, Autechre, Banco De Gaia and even the Red Hot Chilli Peppers all performed there. Think its busy nowadays at Vancouver's clubs? Which club can boast having over a 1000 patrons dancing to the most innovative house/techno/electro etc on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays? None! There has not been one club in Vancouver that has come even close to eclipsing Graceland in regards to the most innovative dance and clubculture music scene since it closed its doors (it was called The Palladium the last 3 years) on July 3, 2001. If you want to know how house/acid music came to be in Vancouver. This is THE man who brought it here first! The true pioneer of Vancouver's dance music scene: DJ ROBERT SHEA "Robert Shea’s extraordinary deejaying career has spanned 20 years, and includes gigs all over North America and overseas in Frankfurt (guest with Sven Väth at the legendary Omen Club) and Ultraschall Munich. His classy and cohesive set merges the most sophisticated "techie" house with a groovy, funky minimalism; Robert’s set delivers a blast of fresh hedonistic grooves that pumps crowds into both house and techno. Robert formed Map Music in Vancouver in the summer of 1996. Before setting up his label and booking tours for his European peers (SVEN VATH, HARDFLOOR, etc.) he spent time in the American music biz working for Silent/Pulse Soniq (San Francisco) and as HARTHOUSE Label Manager for Eye Q (Los Angeles). He is honoured to be invited to play this uniquely mixed gig, a bit of old school, a bit of new school, all it will be spontaneous, fun and pumping.
