i was fairly certain that it was near my mam's birthday at the end of march / start of april time, i think its actually the last weekend in march. i was briefly worried thou in case i was going nuts.

How about taking her out instead? Gifts are predictable but taking her out to lunch, dinner, movie, etc is a change she'd welcome.
