Blame it On Gravity is the Old 97s’ definitive statement. The 15-year-old Dallas rock band’s seventh album, the disc finds the Rhett Miller-led unit turning up the amps and returning to the satisfying crunch of its earliest records. A renewed focus in main songwriter/lead singer Miller’s vision is undeniable, and his trademarks—clever wordplay and gut-wrenching emotional honesty—are accompanied by a more mature worldview. But make no mistake, these tunes rock—from the feedback-drenched opener “The Fool” to the rollicking “The Easy Way” to the scruffy, Replacements-style love song “I Will Remain”.
Since debuting in 1994 with Hitchhike to Rhome, the Old 97s (named after a Johnny Cash song) have released a plethora of warmly received albums, including 2001’s Satellite Rides and 2004’s Drag it Up, that mix bluegrass, surf, country, folk and good old-fashioned psychedelia. Blender magazine named “Murder (Or a Heart Attack)”, off the band’s 1999 album Fight Songs, as one of the best songs of all time. Old 97s tracks have appeared on the soundtrack to King of the Hill as well as on various television shows such as Scrubs, Ed and Veronica Mars. The band was featured in the 2006 movie The Break-Up, and its song “Timebomb” was the opening track in the 1998 film Clay Pigeons. The Old 97s have been praised as a great live band, and in 2005 released a live double CD, Alive and Wired.
