Artist Bio
The Flairs are a 21st century band ready to take the world by storm with their catchy, hook-laden rock songs harkening back to the days of ‘80’s metal and punk, sweetly flavoured with a whole-lotta attitude.
After creating a buzz with their 2004 debut EP, Vancouver based band, The Flairs are on a mission to rock even more with their new full length CD Shut Up and Drive. The first single and video is a spin on Skid Row’s “18 & Life” which hit rock radio stations this month, with the CD being released May 23rd in Canada (Pacific Music/Warner) and June 13th in the U.S. (Pacific Music/Burnside).
The Flairs are currently preparing for their intensive cross Canada and US tours which kick off in Vancouver May 19th 2006. They are also just shot a video for their second single off the album “Sorry 4 Lovin’ You” to be released during the summer tour.
After virtually growing up in Tuuli and opening for bands such as The Donnas, Disturbed and Rock legends Cheap Trick, Dawn Mandarino (vocals and guitar) and Jen Foster (drums and vocals) decided to form their own band. The Flairs story started in the summer of 2002 when Dawn and Jen met Bif Naked’s guitar slinger, Gillian Hanna (lead guitar and vocals) as they played North American outdoor festivals and concerts. All three found the common ground and added Gillian’s brother Ryan Hanna (bass) to the trio and the band was officially born.
They attribute their unique sound to their individual influences; Dawn’s love for the Ramones, Jen’s ska-influenced punk in the vein of the Dance Hall Crashers, and Hanna’s passion for heavy guitar rock groups like Metallica and Guns ‘N Roses. Their perspective tastes go hand in hand with the bands that initially sparked their imagination like Veruca Salt, Nirvana, Garbage and Stone Temple Pilots. In the mix they have created a sound The Flairs can truly call their own.
Having created a healthy buzz across Canada as a forceful live act, THE FLAIRS constant touring has included a successful run with rawk legend David Lee Roth, highly praised performances at three consecutive Vancouver’s New Music West festival, and a sold out show at Toronto’s NXNE. In preparation for their winter 2005 six-week cross Canada tour with notorious Toronto rocker Robin Black, Much Music TV picked up the band’s second video “Falling into Pieces,” which received frequent air play. During this tour, THE FLAIRS ruled Toronto’s prestigious Canadian Music Week, performing an intense energy-filled set expanding their already rabid fan base. They have since showcased at New York City’s esteemed punk rock venues, Los Angeles’ International Pop Overthrow Festival and headlined the ROCKRGRL Music Conference in Seattle.
Their 2004 EP was described as a magical blend of youthful spirit and undeniable talent by a group determined to unleash their vision on an unsuspecting public hungry for real living, breathing punk-coloured hard rock with smart pop sensibilities. The new album Shut Up and Drive delivers on that promise even more. Songs such as energetic “Sorry for Loving You” and “Falling Into Pieces” and catchy “Stinger” that you cannot help but sing along, puts this band in a new light of what The Flairs music is really all about. Shup Up and Drive is fast, loud and extremely addictive. They are a forceful live act that continues to expand their already rabid-fan base with passion and drawing power.
