A Vancouver OG that was, and still is many a soulheads favourite...
Born Mike Bleackley in Montreal Canada, DJ Madness grew up in the Montreal, Toronto area with a brief stop in Orange County CA finally arriving in vancouver BC in the early nineties.
“Music was my thing right from the start, I began collecting house music in 1988. Living in Toronto at the time my exposure to house music was huge. Toronto had fantastic radio stations and DJ shows that featured the entire dance music vibe. I was hooked as soon as I heard it. My collection started with “Can you feel it” by Fingers inc., “French Kiss” by Louie Vega, the usual must haves.”
First Mix-”Radio Shack turntables” and I tried to teach myself how to mix! Musical Icons- Louie Vega, Kerri Chandler, Todd Terry and James Brown.
My Club Circuit-Opened a Monday night at a club downtown we called the night “The Crib”. The hard work i put into this gig helped me get into the scene in Vancouver. This led to me playing at other parties around town. Eventually i landed “Romper Room” which was the premier house night in the city at that time. Ove the next few years i had a residences at Red Lounge, Graceland, Twilight Zone and Bar None, Au Bar, Stone Temple, Mars, The World, Caprice, ginger62, Sky Bar, Shine, Tommy Africa’s in Whistler and several events at the world famous, Commodore Ballroom.
