::MARTIJN TEN VELDEN::
Martijn ten Velden is a born and bred Haarlem boy, Haarlem that is in Holland !! Hip Hop is where he made a name for himself early on in his career, tasting success as the DJ of Dutch hip hop collective “Da Mad Scientists, playing all over Holland between 1987 – 1989 at venues such as the Paradiso, Mazzo, Rothanhuis, Akhnaton, and DMC Championships, Amsterdam 1998. He supported some of the great world renowned hip hop acts of the time like Kool Moe Dee, Stetsasonic, Cash Money and Marvelous and Martijn even found himself guest Djing with the Stereo Mc’s.
In 1990 this producer, writer, remixer, and all round studio talent, decided to move to London and it wasn’t long though before the sound of house music won him over. He soon found himself Djing to house crowds throughout the UK, Europe and Middle East and hooking up with production partner and fellow DJ, David James to form the inimitable Audio Drive.
Together they remixed the likes of Ms Dynamite, DB Boulevard, Agent Sumo, Eddie Grant, the Sugababes and Tom Novy.. They also co-produced (with Grammy Award winner Rick Nowels) a track for Kylie called "Whenever you feel like it"' which featured on her “Fever Remixed” album.
Many of their own productions were released on their own label Dirty Skankin Sounds. But they teamed up with Defected Records to release their "Voodoo Magic EP" on the offshoot label, Fluential. It was quickly followed by ‘I Feel Good’, which was the first ever release on the now renowned Toolroom Records! Their last production together was a remake of the classic 'Come Get My Lovin' by Dione, under the guise DJMTV on Fantastic House / HiBias and Roger Sanchez loved the track so much, he made it 'New York's finest' on his Release Yourself Radio show.
Never one to stand still, Martijn then began working with Mark Knight and another successful partnership was in the making. Their first production, 'Our House EP' had massive radio support from Pete Tong. DTPM held a special launch party for the release @ Fabric where the boys played a blistering four deck set which rocked the club. That was the start of their now inimitable and blisteringly hot back to back sets which have since become a Toolroom Knights event not to be missed.
Their next production was 'Acid Test', released on Fantastic House in March 2004, with radio support again from Tong plus Seb Fontaine, Annie Nightingale, X-press 2 and hailed by Steve Lawler as his biggest track of 2003.
It was soon clear that Martijn and Mark had a winning formula and other projects including 'The Hedgetrimerz', released on Toolroom Trax in the summer of 2004, were not only popular club tracks but working on radio too – this track had seven plays in a row by Seb Fontaine on Radio 1. Martijn and Mark's production 'A New Reality' featuring E Man was released January 2005 and reached no. 2 in the UK Hype Chart.
It was only natural that with this success and demand, the boys would become much in demand remixers and they soon built up a string of high profile remixes : You’ll know their classic remix of Soul Central 'Strings of Life' and Ferrer & Sydenham 'Sandcastles'. Then there was Brad Carter 'Morning Always Comes too Soon', Portobella’s 'Vive Le Difference', ATFC 'Fall Down', Narcotic Thrust 'When the Dawn Breaks' and Holmes St. Ives '8 Letters', All of which have kept Martijn well & truly in the dance charts and on dancefloors around the world…………
And of course it comes as no surprise that Martijn and Mark were nominated for “Best Artist” and “Outstanding Remix” @ the House Music Awards 2005.
However, keen to keep his name in the headlines, Martijn also enjoys working on solo productions and other interesting collaborations. He’s crafted a sound which is undeniably funky yet tribal with progressive, tech and electro overtones and as one major fan put it “bye bye soulful house, welcome to the dark side. Shamone Mother F*****S” !!!!!!!!!
His 'The Sureshot EP' was released on Nocturnal Groove (Home of Shapeshifters 'Lola's theme' ) and hit it big with the underground heads. It was then closely followed by Martijn’s first major solo release through Phonetic Recordings (hitting no 3 Coolcuts + no 2 Buzz chart) entitled “I Wish You Would”.
It was a huge anthem in Ibiza during Summer 2006 and 2007, with all the major heroes supporting and crowds singing the lyrics back to the DJ…
It was then signed to nearly every territory around the world, to the likes of Robbins in USA, Sony / BMG in Canada and EMI / MOS in Australia and then to All Around The World / Universal for the UK and had a full major release with phenomenal new remixes from Tom Novy (major support from Pete Tong on his Essential show), Hook N Sling, Junior J and Luetzenkirchen. There was also a quirky music promo featuring the lead singer, Luciana Caporaso from Bodyrox fame, Martijn and some rather sexy carpets – don’t ask just watch !! –

Also check out his co-production, Bassification on Toolroom Records with fellow Dutchman !!!
Finally, the end of 2007 also brought you his joint project with breakbeat don, Mark Yardley from Stanton Warriors called Splittr “All Alone”, signed to Eye Industries / Universal and released through EMI / MOS in Australia and featuring Mark Yardley on vocals…. This was a meeting of musical minds and is a continued project which offers Martijn the chance to break away from the norm. Expect to hear a plethora of tracks in the coming year from these guys, which don’t fit any genre nor adhere to specific bpm’s ! In addition, Eye Industries commissioned a brilliantly shot and directed promo for the track, which has been a huge hit with all the main music TV channels in UK including the likes of MTV Dance and The Box. Djing is of course another major part of his life and represented by Main Stage Artists Booking agency (Eric Prydz, Shapeshifters) and Empire Agency / Ultra in USA, Martijn is booked throughout the world to play. Key gigs include DJ Magazine Arena at the infamous Opening of Space-Ibiza, becoming the first Dutch DJ to do so, a 2008 residency at Amnesia, Ibiza – playing the terrace, "Another Twisted Halloween" alongside Mr C and Sister Bliss, the Get Loaded Festival in Glasgow alongside James Zabiela plus he regularly tours Europe, USA, South America and Australia. In early 2007, he won Best International DJ at the National Danish DJ Awards and at the end of the year, he won Best DJ Mix at major UK radio station, Kiss FM’s Friday Night Awards. In Summer 2008, he was a regular feature at Amnesia, Ibiza and nothing sums him up better than Cooljunkie’s comments - “he has to be one of the most enthusiastic DJ’s out there…..he smiles, he dances and he sends out this vibe that feels like he actually knows what you’re feeling while he spins; he’s in total harmony with the crowd!”
His popularity allowed him the chance to record his DJing talents when Toolroom Records asked him along with Dirty Vegas’, Paul Harris to kick off their Toolroom Knights compilation series. An honour indeed…. And it was nominated for Best Compilation @ the 2008 IDMA’s at WMC, Miami alongside MOS The Annual and Ultra Dance.
Off the back of a huge remix for “Shapeshifters – Chime” with his mix staying in Beatport’s Top 5 for over 4 weeks, 2009 will see the release of his absolute anthemic remix of Farley & Heller’s “Ultra Flava” (Feb 2009) – which always gets a huge crowd reaction – must be the killer breakdown !!! Also a year of new productions for MTV and he kicks the year off with his melodic instrumental track “Together” to be released through www.phoneticrecordings.com. A full vocal will be aired at Miami WMC 2009. Keep it locked on all things Martijn as the follow up to Together features a certain well known D&B MC / vocalist and will undoubtedly dispel any pre-conceived ideas of tech house.
So it seems clear to all around that Martijn's diverse musical influences coupled with his love for all that is quality in house music, will ensure he continues his rise to the top.
Make no mistake - this is the true story of one major flying Dutchman !
