DJ RICHARD EVANS:. This is a brief history and timeline of one of Vancouvers' most legendary, prolific and influential DJ experiences in the music industry in Vancouver. This man has seen it all!!!
In 1980 at the Luv-a-Fair Nightclub the Kerasiotis brothers made the switch from beloved progressive disco DJ Richard Evans, to one who catered to a decidedly straight crowd and artists like the Cramps and the Clash, change did not come easily. In fact, it nearly caused a war. One night the disco-loving crowd chose to revolt by sitting down on the dance floor. But the Kerasiotis brothers had read the mood of popular culture, and deemed that it was time for a change. Perhaps their greatest strength was that ability to gauge the climate and choose DJs appropriately. Richard Evans - Richard still is a DJ and played many clubs in Vancouver. It is unfortunate he had to be the DJ at the sit in but I think credit has to be given to him for playing a few tunes prior to the sit in that people wanted to hear like B-52's, Blondie. The sit-in ended the DISCO and peoples momentary frustration with hearing it when all they really wanted was the new music they were into. all the music was more band oriented after that. Richard did return which showed he had the ability to change and introduce newer material to what he was playing something some DJ's never did so he survived when many quit.
Ofcourse DJ Richard Evans never gave up on dance/electro music and has a music library that most djs can only dream of.Has the latest most cutting edge electronic music from Paris, Miami and London! Must be heard to be believed!!
1978-1981 Luv-A-Fair Cabaret
Music played throughout those years include Disco to New Wave.
It was 1980 when Richard Evans was awarded Best DJ in Vancouver by Billboard Magazine!!. This was the only time Billboard gave out such an award. Richard was sent to New York City to represent Canada on a DJ panel along with many of the worlds top club Disc Jockeys. These included Jim Burgess and Tom Moulton{who many claim was the first nightclub DJ to incorporate two turntables and make the first mix}. While In NYC Richard spent a good deal of time at the prolific Paradise Garage where he met the legendary late DJ Larry Levan and his friend Francois Kevorkian. Many attest that the garage sound originated at the Paradise Garage.
1982-1984 Numbers Cabaret
Progressive Dance
In 1983-1984 Richard was the host of The Saturday Night Import Show at UBC's CITR Radio. Some of the artists he introduced included: Simple Minds, Depeche Mode, The Residents, Magazine, Joy Division, Nina Hagen, The Stranglers, DAF, Test Department, Violent Fems, Public Image Ltd., Ofra Haza, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Colourbox, and The Thompson Twins. Richard personally entertained a good many of these artists when they came to Vancouver!
1985-1988 Graceland{later became The Palladium}
1985-1988 Celebritities
Richard owned and operated The Keystone Record Pool
1995-1998 The Underground Cabaret{now The Stone Temple}
1999-2003 The Pumpjack
{Progressive House}
DJ KATE MATTHEWS:
http://www.myspace.com/djkatematthews
Kate Matthews fell in love with house music after attending Summer Love 99, and started spinning records at the age of 17 when her friends got her a pair of turntables and challenged her to give it a try. Her love of deep basslines and house rhythm drove her to teach herself how to match her beats. She spent countless hours locked in her bedroom mastering the beautiful art of the mix.
Besides Vancouver, Kate has held residencies in both Calgary and Switzerland. She also opened the TAB Energy Drink Launch Party at the world famous Calgary Stampede in the Summer of 2006. In 2007 she played 6 nights a week at the hotel discotheque Mescalaro, located at the Hotel Spinne in Grindelwald, Switzerland. She has also opened for the likes of Steve Smooth and DJ Deano in Calgary, and played alongside Vancouver heavyweights Skilla, Jesse James, Timelime, Jesse Hills & RC Lair.
Kate's style is unique, blending classic sexy New York styled deep house basslines with funky electro. She is influenced by Luke Fair, Desyn Masiello and her good friend and New York House Guru, DJ Eman.
Kate has a highly tuned ear for reading the crowd. She always seems to know when to bring in some vocals or drop some heavy, dirty bass. Kate Matthew's track selection is golden, her favorite producers include Chris Lake, The Lawnchair Generals, Troydon, Sneaky Sound System and Haji & Emanuel. She currently holds a residency at the ultra chic Vancouver nightclub Republic on weekends in the VIP room. Easy on the eyes and candy for the ears, Kate never fails to blow away whoever is on the other side of the speakers.
SINGER: CASSANDRA NANTEL
Is a 23 year old singer/songwritter who attends acting school full time and also does some modeling on the side. Cassandra is currently just emerging into the electronica scene as a recording artist and am excited to see what the future hold's for her.
