His debut solo studio album release was the self titled Joe Budden. The album included Budden's 2003 summer hit "Pump It Up", which was also featured on the Def Jam Soundtrack for 2 Fast 2 Furious. Its second single was "Fire" featuring Busta Rhymes.


In 2004, Budden began work on his second album, titled The Growth. However, it suffered numerous delays, leading fans to speculate that the album was in some sort of development hell, though he and his label Def Jam, denied this. It was later confirmed that The Growth was canceled by Def Jam and Joe has since gotten a deal with Amalgam Digital. Budden's apparently deteriorating relationship with Def Jam's president Jay-Z, which may have contributed to the delays.
