Since 2004 Need2Soul has become the byword for soulful house whose parties and releases are a must in the calendar for deep house enthusiasts. Renowned for introducing the hottest new DJs and acts, over the past two years nights at pivotal London clubs The Key, Cargo, Fabric, Turnmills and Ministry of Sound, have seen the likes of Frankie Feliciano, hotter than hot Quentin Harris and the impossibly impressive live act Tortured Soul rock the packed out crowds. Not content with simple promotions, Need2Soul recently launched its record label issuing the same soulful house whose first release sold out almost immediately.
This May Need 2 Soul, celebrate their 2nd birthday. And who better to help assist the revelries but legendary Chicago DJ/producer/musician, and founder of Prescription Records Ron Trent, gracing the proceedings with the sound of his signature ancestral and often afrocentric, deep house and garage.
Since 1982 Trent has spun vinyl and produced early forms of house music for Chicago’s legendary warehouse parties. In 1990 at the tender age of 14, Ron released his debut production, the much-lauded classic acid house tune “Altered States”. Soon after however Ron moved away from trance-orientated music, veering towards percussive, deep house swaying with African rhythms and elements of jazz, disco and funk, much influenced by a childhood home filled with the sounds of Larry Heard, Roy Ayers and Pat Metheny. In 1993 alongside Detroiter Chez Damier, Ron established Prescription Records and set about releasing a gamut of tracks throughout the years made by themselves plus others including Abacus, A Man Called Adam, USG, Angora and Warp Dub Soundsystem.
In 1998 Ron relocated to Brooklyn, New York, moving with him the company and establishing a strong relationship with Giant Step Records, producing original tracks for Inner City, Groove Collective, Amel Larriuex, Anastacia, Tony Allen and 4 Hero. Giant Step has also made Trent their resident DJ at the long-running weekly Thursday night parties in the City. He was also named by Vestax- Japan as their International endorsee for their new Vestax R1 Premium DJ Mixer and is hailed by many as being one of the best DJs in the world. Tonight’s special party sees London’s own Rap Saunders (from the Soulmates parties, see www.club-soulmates.co.uk for more) and Ben Chapman (BBE Records) assist Ron behind the decks for a night which looks set to be an unprecedented, unadulterated smorgasboard of deep house loveliness.
