Ministry of Sound / Palms Out / Trouble & Bass
A few months ago, I searched the web for a DJ named "AC Slater" after stumbling upon his banGer of a track on Palms Out Sounds. Needless to say, all that came up were photos of our favorite 90's steroid-pumped latin lover with a mullet. Hungry for some more hunk, I recently gave the search another go, and this time, in the top three search results was a myspace link to the "real" AC Slater.
I gave AC Slater a call earlier this week at his home in Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY to talk about his Saved by the Bell VHS tape, his signed De La Soul album, and why he started DJing. "When I was really young, I went on vacation, and I had saved up all this money for the vacation with my family. And I met this kid, a friend of my cousin's, who was a DJ, and I was completely mesmerized so I took all the money I had and went to the pawn shop and bought a DJ mixer. When I came home, I started making hip hop mixes for all the kids in my neighborhood and it just kind of took off from there". Its not surprising then that alongside "old school rave stuff", early 90's hip hop has influenced his music a lot. In fact, AC considers De La Soul's album De La Soul is Dead (1991) his most influential album "because it's so humorous and fun, and well put together and so lighthearted, but at the same time it's really good, just bad ass. Everything about it is great, and it put me in the mode to think that music should be fun".
With over 20 current remixes and productions already out, AC Slater is about to explode! He's done work with Moby (The Stars Remix), Drop the Lime, The Freestylers, Titsworth, Steve Angello & Laidback Luke to name a few.
If you like that electro indie mash up movement, this show is for you. Don't believe me? Check out his myspace page for music >> http://www.myspace.com/theacslater
