Jimmy (James) Baldwin is a unique modern guitarist, singer and songwriter who was born and raised in northern British Columbia, but now calls Vancouver home. Drawing on a wide range of influences, his vocal stylings have been influenced by such legendary country artists as Waylon Jennings, Randy Travis and Dwight Yoakam.
As a guitarist, Jimmy has assimilated elements of numerous genres including country, bluegrass, jazz, funk, rock and various world music forms- specifically West African- into his own personal style. He cites masters as stylistically diverse as Danny Gatton, Jeff Beck, Allan Holdsworth, Robben Ford, and, more recently, Brad Paisley as having profound influences on his playing- but the list could go on! A deep and complex artist, Jimmy is as comfortable delivering lonesome songs of heartbreak as he is rip-roaring, up- tempo barn-burners. The constant force that pervades all his work, though, is his enthusiastic personality that shines through in his playing and singing. His unwavering commitment, focus, and dedication to his craft have resulted in a level of musicianship and performance practice rarely seen in someone his age.
No stranger to adversity, Jimmy has overcome many obstacles and personal tragedies that continue to inform his songwriting. He remains optimistic and a thread of positivity and hope runs through his work. He often takes a “tell it like it is” approach partially due to the influence of great songwriters like Hank Williams, Townes Van Zandt, and Bruce Springsteen.
After having spent the last ten years developing a unique musical voice, Jimmy could not be more excited about embarking on a solo career. He has worked and/or continues to work with Afro-Funk/World Fusion group “Jarimba”; rock trio “Uncommon Gold” led by Canadian jazz guitar great Stephen Fisk; Chinese virtuoso Mei Han; and country/pop singers Sandra Laratta, Todd Richard and AJ Woodworth. Jimmy remains in demand as a sideman, session player and accomplished music educator in the Vancouver area.
