Habitat Living Sound Present Disorientals Work Out Plan
Join Habitat as we welcome DMC Champion DJ Disoriental every Friday night!
DJing under the name of Disoriental, 26-year-old Jon Chung has many accomplishments. Most notably, back-to-back Calgary DMC championships in 2002 and 2003. Starting when he was 19, it only took watching DJ Q-Bert at the night Gallery in the late '90s to make Chung want to put away his Pennywise CD in exchange for turntables. He would go to his buddy DJ Rye's house, hang out and listen to music.
By the early millennium, Disoriental had earned his rightful place as one of Calgary's top turntablists. However, floating through resident nights at places such as NYLA left him feeling pigeonholed as just a turntablist and not a DJ that can rock a party.
"Maybe two out of ten people would want to show up and watch some dude scratch for four hours," Chung says. He's in a different mind state now.
Disoriental grew up listening to punk rock alongside of hip hop. These days, he's more interested in "rockin' a party then impressing the hip hop purist with a specific cut."
It wasn't until he began a residency with DJ Al Testa at Sal's that he really learned how to craft his party-rockin' skills. I can feel his sincerity when he expresses props for Testa. He finds it fitting in Calgary's music community to distance yourself from the term "turntablist" and still have respect for the house, dance rock and mash-ups.
Join us as DJ Disoriental takes you on a journey of funk, disco, rap and dance. Trust me, this one will make you mother f*ckers sweat!
