Since its inception in 1995, Bar Cleveland has stood the test of time in an area least expected to create such an impact on the hotel bar scene in Sydney, capturing the true essence of the modern Australian, inner city pub.
Situated on the corner of Bourke and busy Cleveland Street, on the fringe of Surry Hills and Redfern, The Cleveland Inn, as it was known since 1915, was the traditional 'locals' pub' complete with amazing tiles, poky little rooms and beautiful coffered ceilings. The building is featured in the Powerhouse Museum as a unique building of its time, including pub art and sandstone features.
The hotel's refurbishment and restoration in 1995 transformed and projected this tired and ill-treated building into an establishment that many hotels envied and copied, especially after it won awards for the best bar presentation and service, and 'Best Redeveloped Hotel' by the Australian Hotels Association.
