EL MOROCCO THEATER & NIGHTCLUB DESCRIPTION

The new EL MOROCCO THEATER & NIGHTCLUB is a recreation of the famous original of the 1930’s and 40’s that brings into the new millennium a unique hybrid of a Supper Club, Nightclub and Theater. The club is located on the corner of 145th Street and Broadway, a historical premise in a thriving, vibrant and ever changing neighborhood that was once a USO club in the 1940’s and 50’s and later in the 1960’s one of the City’s most popular and glamorous Latin clubs, Club Caborrojeño.

The original El Morocco was famous for its zebra-stripe motif. In every picture taken at the original location, as depicted in John Perona’s 1937 “El Morocco Family Album,” the zebra stripes and banquettes were the trademark in every shot. The original El Morocco had some great history behind it. It was the glamorous supper club where the Vanderbilts and Astors dined near royalty, where Cary Grant and Marlene Dietrich hung out and where Jackie went as both Mrs. Kennedy and Mrs. Onassis. The venue was also the place where the great Tito Puente recorded his live Cha Cha Cha album at the El Morocco in 1958 with his world famous orchestra also featuring Pete Luis. El Morocco was also the place where the famous Dominican diplomat, polo player, race driver and notorious playboy, Porfirio Rubirosa, dallied with beautiful women such as: Dolores del Rio, Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth, Eva Peron and many others. He was also briefly married to Zsa Zsa Gabor and the American heiress, philanthropist and one of richest women in the world, Doris Duke.

El Morocco was the first club to use a velvet rope and where actor Humphrey Bogart was banned from for life. This same legacy is what the new EL MOROCCO THEATER & NIGHTCLUB seeks to establish with the infamous zebra motif in the Main Room and in the more Contemporary Leopard Lounge. This is a modern interpretation that will be complete with Off-Broadway Shows, Live Latin entertainment featuring Merengue, Bachata, House, Salsa, Reggaeton, and Latin Jazz bands, Comedy/Variety shows, Unplugged Concerts, TV and Radio Shows, Sporting Events/Private Parties, and Charity/Fundraisers, just to name a few. The club is complete with a private, corporate party space equipped with state-of-the-art visual and sound systems.

The 10,000 square foot space has been meticulously decorated to welcome its guests into a true out-of-this-world art deco experience in the heart of Hamilton Heights. The new El Morocco captures the spirit of the original with 1940’s Art Deco details in a club layout complete with the same Zebra Skin motif made famous in hundreds of photos and movies. El Morocco also features an additional room, the Leopard Lounge, which has a more modern style with a lounge feel and layout. The entire room features the Leopard Skin motif with a mahogany bar and separate stage and sound system. The El Morocco on Broadway in the main room will be a complete world class Theater with Broadway quality sound and lighting.
