AVALON

Avalon, the former Limelight, has been transformed into one of the most cutting edge nightclubs in the world. Out of the ashes of the previous church, a modern club design combined with state of the art sound and lighting systems has developed.

The design concept was to create a modern intervention within the existing church space, a landmark building in NYC. The owners and the designers freferred to the projects such as the Musee D'Orsay and the Museum of Natural History in Paris for inspiration, historic structures in which new and very modern designs were floated inside. It was the intention to highlight the breathtaking architectural elements of the original church building, such as the stone walls and the soaring gothic arhes, and then float modern elements within, creating a tenuous but strong connection between the new and the old. New elements are articulated as slick "skins" which peel away from the original walls of the building.
