Located at 333 S. Boylston St., Tatou unfolds inside singer Prince's old Glam Slam club, a popular destination for clubbers and celebrities until its demise several years ago. Since then, the sprawling space has hosted a short-lived club, a few one-off events and film crews. In recent years the area has seen a surge in development that includes hundreds of apartments, retail and a movie studio.
The conversion began in September, with the design team working around the clock to pull off the plush interior, which will pay homage to the old Cocoanut Grove nightclub with a grand ballroom. Pieces of the Century Club and booths from the Beverly Hills Tatou have been refurbished and incorporated into the new space.
"Most supper clubs were very classy and elegant with a very affluent and older crowd," Iriarte said. "We're bringing it into the 21st century."
Dotted with four 15-foot palm trees and draped with nearly $70,000 in fabric, Tatou will feature a 40-foot stage, two dance floors, multiple levels and bars, an Asian cantina, a smoking patio and 30 plasma screens for entertainment and sports events. Iriarte said a second phase would include a sleek rooftop restaurant and lounge with skyline views.
