Tavolo opened in 2008 as a casual pizza joint where “everybody knows your name.” Chef-Owner Chris Douglass had just closed his ground-breaking South End boite, Icarus, and this spot in Dorchester’s Carruth Building seemed a natural swing away from upscale dining.
The neighborhood embraced Tavolo, but the frank and vocal feedback of its regulars resulted in a design and menu overhaul in 2010. Tavolo has since evolved into a comfortable and mature restaurant with a cozy dining alcove, lively see-and-be-seen lounge, space for private parties, and a welcoming attitude.
Best of all, chef de cuisine Nuno Alves (formerly of Rialto) has upped the ante here with a local farm menu, meats butchered in-house, fresh breads, and fresh-made cheeses, charcuterie and pasta. Jump on the Red Line and (re) discover Tavolo.
