Leon “Pappy” Selph just may have been the best fiddle player that ever lived. He was the inventor of Texas swing and is best known for having written "The Orange Blossom Special." Back when the Original Goode Company BBQ opened on Kirby Drive, he'd play the first Friday of every month for a flat rate of $65 and a bottle of Jack Daniels. He'd always take the whiskey upfront. And at the end of the evening when Jim handed him the money, the fiddle player would quietly fold it up and stick it in Jim’s shirt pocket. He'd tell him, “Jim, things will get better. You just stick with it.” It was a kind gesture and good advice.

This all left quite an impression on Jim's son, Levi. So it was no surprise, when years later, Levi decided Houston needed a dedicated home for Texas music and created the Armadillo Palace right across the street from the original barbeque place that Pappy played all those years ago.

Goode's Armadillo Palace hosts live Texas music several days a week. It serves a full menu of Texas comfort food and is available for parties of just about every size. Levi is no less demanding than his father is, and no place captures the spirit of Texas music the way the Armadillo Palace does.
