Onyx is a distinguished cocktail lounge and nightclub in San Diego's bustling Gaslamp quarter. Onyx first opened in August of 1999 and boasted an overwhelming popularity. For the past three and a half years, Onyx has stayed true to its ideals of excellent entertainment, service and quality. The legend of Onyx came from the infamous 1960s "Famous Door" cocktail lounge. The basement venue has little signage, and the allure has been a "find us if you can" theme- a word-of-mouth insider spot. The essence of Onyx is its vibrant lounge with a relaxed atmosphere but successfully combined with a cutting edge nightclub. Live jazz is played every Tuesday, and urban house beats from the best house DJs in the nation are spun on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. At Onyx, we believe that our guests are what really set us apart. We have truly captured something special. They are open-minded, "up for anything," and above all incredibly friendly and trend-setting people.
Onyx brings something different out in the culture of downtown nightlife. It is a nightclub at ease with all the details that make a club really work. An unusually tight synergy in the music and the visuals enhance the overall experience of Onyx. Onyx eludes one defining style, but is also eclectic. With the understanding of what makes a club truly great is not the music alone, but rather the artists' approach to the music and their own interpretation and arrangement of rhythms.
Onyx, with a variety of vinyl connoisseurs spinning everything from rare grooves and break beat to hip hop and house music and live jazz bands has mastered this art. Join us for one of our famous classic cocktails such as the famous Onyx Red Apple Martini, or our class Jack and Coke served in a prohibition style coffee mug. These and many other cocktails were inspired by an age of materialism, sex, drugs and of course alcohol, which according to F. Scott Fitzgerald helped to produce, "the greatest, gaudiest spree in history."
